While I do try to respond as soon as I receive an invite, sometimes it's just not possible when trying to determine my schedule and ability to travel, in the case that it's a destination wedding. Nevertheless, I always reply before the RSVP deadline!
When I was planning my first wedding it was hard not to get angry with guests that took forever to RSVP. I actually had some of my ex's friends that thought it was okay to just text him to tell him their RSVP - even though I'd spent money on the RSVP cards.
Because of this I make sure to always RSVP before the deadline and if there's something to mail back I mail it back.
